Something Remains

I was reading a random historical fiction novel in 2015 told from the viewpoint of a 12 year old German boy. The teacher turned author drew from the research done a few years earlier and wrote the novel, keeping the names of the Jewish characters. That's how I was able to identify this story as my family. story. This film is my search for what really happened to them between 1933-1938 when they left by boat to come to the US. It's a story of the micro history of the Nazi era when the persecution of Jews were just beginning. There was no blood, but there was damage. What happened that an assimilated German family could go fro one day to the next- neighbors, friends and politically active in the community, to outcasts and refugees. What will I find that sparks of parallel to what is happening today .
